Starting Where You Are: A Mindset Shift for Achieving Your Goals

Abundant Birth just hit a milestone - 100 followers on IG. While that may not be a lot to some folks, for us it’s a celebration of getting started.

Abundant Birth has been an idea in our hearts for over a year. While there isn’t a “perfect” time to do anything, there are seasons for everything. In the last year, while pregnant with our second child, we've missed certain opportunities like vendor fairs, entrepreneurship workshops, and training.

The fact is that we were in a time in our lives when that type of hustle and grind wasn’t realistic for us. We have had to re-evaluate our plans and desires multiple times since then - needing to step back to prioritize our own growing family.

But there’s power in getting started where you are! Below are five tips to propel you to take the next step.

5 tips for embarking on something new

Tip #1 Start where you are.

Life is unpredictable. Even our best, well-intended plans can be overturned. It’s easy to get discouraged by your current season of life. We encourage you to be honest about your capacity. Welcoming a new child, changing jobs, or family dynamics can cause you to perform differently - that’s OK.

Do what you can, when you can. The rest will work out.

Tip #2 Don’t be stifled by perfectionism.

As cliche as it may seem, perfection is the enemy of good. Perfection is subjective and unattainable. We all have to start somewhere. You can always get new systems, strategies, and mindsets to improve. You have to begin the process to facilitate growth.  Your “good enough” can still be effective and make progress.

Tip #3 See a need? Meet it.

Abundant Birth was formed when we recognized a market gap – a lack of representation of diverse birthing people. We wanted to create a product to foster joy and inclusivity in those journeys. To allow individuals to feel seen and valued.

Your unique idea, talent, or expertise could be utilized to meet an unmet need. Go for it!

Tip #4 Lean on your community.

Having a support network is vital whether you’re starting a new venture or entering a new stage of life, such as welcoming a baby. Your inner circle can help share the load and hold you accountable as you move toward certain goals.

It’s OK to ask for help. It’s completely fine to outsource or discover new ways to complete tasks that ease the burden. Tap into your community. Those individuals might know an efficiency that you haven't thought of.

Tip #5 Communicate with grace and honesty.

We all fall short at some time. Learn to accept grace. This requires a certain vulnerability. For example, communicating to business partners when you can’t meet specific timelines. Life happens. Our capacity can vary from day to day.  Show up, tell the truth and let people know what's going on. They're likely going to be more forgiving than you think.

These five tips can be applied beyond new business ventures or habit-building. We believe there are parallels between business and the life-changing event that is pregnancy and postpartum.  It is necessary to rest! It's OK to take things slower. You have the right to set boundaries and say no. You are not deficient for asking for assistance and relying on your support network more.  Start today and let go of any guilt or shame about where you are in life. As long as there is a tomorrow, there is another chance to begin.
