Radical Imagination

I’m reading Let This Radicalize You: Organizing and the Revolution of Reciprocal Care by Kelly E. Hayes and Mariame Kaba. This book has challenged me to reflect deeply on my role in creating a world rooted in care, justice, and hope for future generations. It’s made me think about what I should be doing—and what I should be building—to bring the world I hope to see into existence.

Here’s my answer:

I imagine a world for my daughters that is full of natural beauty—a beauty born of a planet well cared for, with thriving ecosystems, clean air, and accessible green spaces.

I imagine them surrounded by friends, partners, and a community that knows them deeply and intimately, embracing them for who they are—whatever community looks like for them.

I hope they experience the joy of dancing, singing, laughing, and late-night sleepovers with a circle of women who see and understand them fully.

I hope they have the resources—physical, emotional, and financial—to make empowered choices about parenthood. If they choose to have children, I hope they are surrounded by the medical and emotional support needed to not just weather that experience but to truly enjoy it.

I wish for their safety and bodily autonomy. I wish for peace. For care. For hope.

I hope they have a strong sense of self—a centeredness that guides them through life’s tough decisions with clarity and confidence.

And maybe selfishly, I hope I’m here to see it all. To hold them, comfort them, and celebrate them through life’s big and little moments. I hope I get to snuggle their babies, hug their partners, and become a surrogate parent to their friends.

But if I’m no longer here, I hope they know this: I fought for a better world. I acted with courage and radical imagination to build a hopeful future. And above all, I hope they know I have, and always will have, so much love for them.

This love—this unshakable hope for my daughters and for all birthing people—is the undercurrent beneath everything we do at Abundant Birth. It’s what drives our mission to create a world where every birthing person is seen, supported, and celebrated.

Together, we can build this future.
